Diamond Compounds

What Should I know About Diamond Compounds?

Oil- and water-soluble diamond compounds are ideal for any application that involves polishing hard and soft materials. Our diamond compounds can cover anything from removing tool marks to pristine finishes of metallographic and optical quality.

What is a Diamond Compound?

Diamond polishing compounds, or diamond pastes as some industry professionals refer to them, are used for polishing metals. Diamond compounds’ precise blend of evenly distributed natural and/or synthetic diamond particles and either a water- or oil-soluble base creates a polishing medium that offers unsurpassed cutting capability and superior finishing. For consistent quality and easy application, diamond compounds are packaged in syringes.

What Are the Main Applications of Diamond Compounds?

Diamond compounds are frequently used by mold and die polishing professionals for final or mirror finishing applications and can be used on a wide variety of materials requiring quick stock removal, pre-polish lapping, pre-polishing and final polishing.

For hard or soft metals requiring different levels of precision, there’s a diamond compound for that purpose.

What is the Difference Between Diamond Compound Grades?

Lower grades are meant for finer polishes. For instance, a diamond compound with a grade of 1 or smaller is best used to create the final, best finish. Higher grades are for stock removal or earlier stages of polishing. A grade of 25 or higher is good for stock removal.

What is the Difference Between Oil- and Water-Based Diamond Compounds?

Oil-based compounds provide improved adherence to the surface being polished. They also allow more heat to be applied while polishing without causing damage to the mold.  Water-based compounds allow for easier cleaning of the tool after polishing. They are washed away more easily and are popular for use on tools set to be coated. In most cases, polishers will choose an oil-based diamond compound.

Why Do Diamond Compounds Come in Different Colors?

The colors of diamond compounds correspond with the grades of the compounds. Higher grades are for less precise applications like stock removal and generally come in darker colors for easy identification.

For example, dark colors like black, brown and purple are easily identifiable as diamond compounds for stock removal and light colors like white, light gray and yellow have smaller grades and are used for final polishing. Each of our diamond compounds can be purchased in multiple grades/colors depending on your application. See our diamond compound product pages for a detailed breakdown of how each color corresponds to its grade.
